What it is

Outpatient rehab vs residential vs weekly therapy

Residential rehab removes you from daily life. Weekly therapy often is not enough when symptoms or use are escalating. Outpatient rehab sits in the middle: several hours of structured care a few days a week (or most days in PHP), with you practicing skills at home overnight.

At RD, that means partial hospitalization (PHP) for full-day structure or intensive outpatient (IOP) for morning or evening tracks. Both treat mental health and addiction—together when needed through dual diagnosis.

Who it fits

When outpatient rehab is the right level

Serious enough for structure. Stable enough to sleep at home.

  • 01

    More than weekly therapy

Mood, panic, cravings, or use have outgrown a one-hour appointment.

  • 02

    Cannot leave for 30 days

Job, kids, school, or lease make residential unrealistic—or unnecessary.

  • 03

    Step-down after detox or hospital

After detox or inpatient, you need daily structure without another locked stay.

  • 04

    Mental health and substances overlap

Depression, anxiety, or trauma ride with alcohol or drugs—and need one plan.

Outpatient recovery center

What “recovery center” means in outpatient care

People searching for a recovery center often picture a residential campus. An outpatient recovery center is different: a real clinic with therapy rooms, groups, and psychiatric support where you attend for scheduled hours, then leave. Skills get tested in the same city, commute, and relationships you will keep after discharge.

Our primary Dallas-area clinic is the Dallas rehab center on the Dallas–Richardson / US-75 corridor. Same outpatient model runs in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. For a statewide map, see Texas outpatient rehab.

Programs inside outpatient rehab

Alcohol rehab and drug rehab run through the same PHP/IOP framework, with tracks for opioids, stimulants, cannabis, and polysubstance use. Mental health tracks cover depression, anxiety, PTSD, and mood disorders. When both are active, dual diagnosis keeps one team and one plan.

Tour rooms on our facility tour page. Ask about cost and insurance before day one. If stopping alone is unsafe, we help coordinate medical detox first, then move you into outpatient care so detox is a doorway—not a revolving door.

A typical outpatient week

Assessment first: substances, mental health, safety, schedule, insurance. Then a recommended level—PHP for daily intensity or IOP for flexible mornings/evenings. Weeks mix group skills, individual therapy, and psychiatric check-ins. Homework is practiced in real life: traffic, family dinners, after-work stress. Many clients step from PHP to IOP as stability grows.

“Real Deal is without a doubt the most structured and therapeutic rehab program I have ever attended. It has brought me to one year in sobriety and I don't know what I would have done had I not participated in the program. I highly recommend Real Deal to anyone struggling with alcohol and/or drugs. It's amazing. Just try it and you will see for yourself!”

“I love all of these guys. These guys made me feel better. They made me think better. I don't feel those ways anymore. Before I came here, I was certain I wouldn't be alive for much longer. These guys fixed that.”

“The Real Deal is an incredible program that prioritizes accessibility more than almost any other PHP, IOP, and Housing program. With housing fees at lower price point than a majority of sober livings, the option to have your pet with you, and a supportive recovery community, they really do try to eliminate barriers to care as much as possible.”
